GOAL 11: SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
  • Emrah Bilge and Gökçe Karaçocuk from the Mind Your Waste Foundation held a seminar with CIP 101 students on December 9, 2024 on How Do We Mind Our Waste? In the seminar, they talked about what garbage is and why it is important, the state of the garbage problem in the world and in Türkiye, the relationship between the current economic system and garbage, what it means to 'Mind Your Waste' and what we can do about it.
  • CIP Overvisor Baran Gül gave Basic Disaster Awareness Training to CIP supervisors and overvisor students on December 3, 2024. Practical information was shared in the training to prepare for disasters individually. Do's and don'ts before, during and after an earthquake were explained. The details of emergency plan, contact person and emergency bag were mentioned.
  • In order to ensure that coastal areas are clean and livable and to contribute to the formation of sustainable cities, a coastal clean-up event was held on November 18, 2024 on the Pendik Coast within the scope of the Urban and Environmental Awareness Project.

  • ETİ Yellow Bike Project, realized in cooperation with the Active Living Association and ETİ, aims to encourage the society to move for a healthy life and to make cycling a part of daily life as one of the healthiest and most enjoyable means of movement. Within the scope of this project, the Active Living Association came together with Civic Involvement Projects and aimed to teach bicycles to those who do not know how to ride a bicycle on the Sabancı University campus. Sabancı University Yellow Bike Ambassadors provided support in cycling education at the event held on October 31 and November 1, 2024.

The Photography Workshop on Accessibility and the City was organized by Selen Avcı from the Civic Involvement Projects Office on October 5, 2024 at Karaköy Minerva Han with the participation of supervisor and overvisor students. Spatial accessibility was discussed with the students who photographed accessible and non-accessible places in Karaköy and Galata. Accessibility problems in the city and different difficulties experienced by different social groups were evaluated through photographs and observations.

In the 2023 Fall and 2024 Spring Semesters, the Disaster Awareness Project was carried out with Sabancı University Search and Rescue Club SUAK, staff team SUDAK, AKUT Foundation, and TAKIM Search and Rescue Association. In this context, CIP 101 students participating in the project received training on basic disaster awareness, medical interventions during disasters, disaster psychology, and psychological first aid and participated in drills on campus.

In 2023 and 2024, in the Wikipedia Project and Digital Citizenship Project carried out within the scope of the CIP 101 course, students took photos of the plants in the Sabancı University Tosun Terzioğlu Botanical Garden and uploaded them to Wikipedia and ensured that the plants were digitally documented.

Campus Hacking Project was carried out with the Fixers Club, one of the 12th Season Changemakers of the Sabancı Foundation Changemakers Program. Within this project's scope, a process consisting of campus discovery, idea development, design, and implementation steps was designed. The 40 students who took the project chose the areas on the campus that they wanted to regenerate and repair. The project's implementation phase was carried out on May 24, 2023. In this context, sitting units were placed at the poolside in the cafe district, and the students painted the floor. A graffiti designed by artists was painted by students on Sokak 18 in the dormitories district. Old distance signs on the walking track were removed and replaced with 3D distance signs produced by Collaboration-Space. The students regenerated the campus and living space according to their needs with the new seating groups. They also repaired one of the worn spots on the campus with the new distance signs.

Within the scope of World Cultural Heritage Day, Haydarpaşa Train Station was visited on April 16, 2023, with supervisor and overvisor students to raise awareness on the protection of cultural heritage. Accompanied by TCDD engineer Esra Yaşayan, Tugay Kartal from Haydarpaşa Solidarity, and archaeologists and architects working at the site, Haydarpaşa Station and Archaeological Excavation Area were visited. 

 

Play workshops were organized on April 26-28, 2023, with earthquake survivor children who had to leave the city they lived in after the earthquake and come to Küçükköy. Four volunteer students from Sabancı University participated in the workshop. Then, on May 9-10, 2023, play workshops were organized with earthquake survivor children at Hatay Payas PayaSTEM Artificial Intelligence Center. Six volunteer students from Sabancı University participated in this workshop.

Center for Spatial Justice organized a seminar on Accessibility and the City for supervisor and overvisor students at Postane on December 5, 2021.

Orman6 organized an online seminar on Designing Sustainable Human Settlements for supervisor and overvisor students on 17 May 2021.
