GOAL 5: GENDER EQUALITY |
Within the scope of the Gender and Sexual Health Project and Human Rights Project, Şule Ceylan and Ömer Ceylan from the LGBTI+ Families and Relatives Association (LISTAG) held a talk on Being an LGBTI+ Family on 25 April 2024 at Sabancı University campus. In the conversation, the activities of LISTAG to support families with LGBTI+ children and to ensure solidarity were also mentioned.
Garip & Zeycan Yildirim Foundation and Sabancı University Martial Arts Club (SUMA) organized a Self-Defense Class for Women on April 17, 2024 at the Sabancı University campus. Self-defense classes for women aim to help women learn how to protect themselves from attackers and avoid being harmed in dangerous situations. Within the scope of this class, simple and effective methods aimed at special defense for women and neutralizing the attacker were conveyed. Both theoretical and practical techniques were learned and practiced.
Within the scope of CIP 101 course, Meriç Çağlar from Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) gave a seminar on "Gender and Disaster" on April 2, 2024. In this context, the importance of integrating a gender perspective into all policies and practices and gender-based disaster management was discussed. During the seminar, an interactive "Post-Disaster Simulation" game was also played.
“SU Gender - CIP Scavenger Hunt” event took place on Monday, March 11 in cooperation with SU Gender and CIP as part of March 8th International Women's Day. At the event, participants searched for answers to questions about gender and feminism while moving around the campus. In addition to the information questions, the participants explored the units and centres on campus with questions to get to know the campus and get an idea about their work on gender equality. SU Gender, Civic Involvement Projects, International Relations Office, Corporate Governance Forum, Information Center, Prof. Dr. Zehra Sayers and Gender Equality Officer Zeynep Çetrez's rooms were among the routes where questions were hidden.
Ebrar Nefes from Mor Çatı Women's Shelter Foundation gave an online seminar on “Violence in Intimate Relationships, Effects of Violence and Mechanisms Against Violence” to CIP 101 students on November 28, 2023. The seminar focused on the definition and types of violence in intimate relationships, the effects of violence and coping mechanisms, measures and support mechanisms against violence.
The memory walk and vikimarathon phase of the Wiki Walks The City project, which combines the Curious Steps: Gender and Memory Walk program of Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) with the vikimarathon, took place on September 25, 2023. In collaboration with Curious Steps storytellers, a memory walk was held in Beyoğlu from Tünel to Taksim, in the search for “the lost traces of gender” in space. In the light of what was learned from the walk, content was produced for Wikipedia held at Sabancı University Karaköy Minerva Han. Two project officers from Sabancı University Civic Involvement Projects also attended the event. Wikipedia projects and content production on Wikipedia will continue within the scope of the Civic Involvement Projects course.
Curious Steps: Gender and Memory Walk, organized by SU Gender, aims to work with young people to offer gender-focused alternative perspectives on the historical, social and political relations that shape the city we live in. Within the scope of the Gender and Sexual Health Project, physical and online memory walks were organized with CIP 101 students in Kadıköy and Beyoğlu in 2022 and 2023.
Within the scope of CIP 101 course, Çayırova Fatih Sultan Mehmet Park was visited on December 22, 2022 and the park was evaluated in terms of gender equality through accessibility, safety, health, sports facilities, recreation and leisure time criteria.
Association for Struggle Against Sexual Violence gave Dating Violence and Safe Sexuality Training to CIP 101 students at Sabancı University on November 27, 2022. In the training, case examples encountered in romantic relationships were presented. The participants were asked whether the attitudes and behaviors of the partners in the cases given as examples were safe or harmful, and whether the relationship presented as a case was safe or not was discussed based on the answers given by the participants.
II. National Conference on Awareness was organized with the support of the Sabancı Foundation at the Sabancı University Performing Arts Center in 2018. At the conference, representatives from universities, high schools, private sector and non-governmental organizations that carry out social responsibility activities came together and shared their experiences around the theme of Women's Studies. Good practices from academia, private sector and civil society in cooperation with young people, women's empowerment and women employment were shared with the participants, while the participants had the opportunity to experience different methods and practices through workshops. The conference also featured the finalist films of Sabancı Foundation's First “Short Film Long Impact Competition” on Refugee Women.
