TOM in the Classroom

TOM@University Project is one of the projects carried out within the scope of the CIP 101 course. Students who choose this project can identify the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities or underdeveloped motor skills and develop simple and creative solutions to these problems. In addition, students can act as practitionersof solutionsdeveloped by student-led communities working on this issue at different universities. The fieldwork for the project takes place at Sabancı University Collaboration-Space (CoSpace). CoSpace provides students with both theoretical and hands-on training on 3D printing and provides support in 3D printing services.

Products such as dice box, card holder, drink holder, drinking can opener,  hands free shoehorn, ring book holder, and foldable backpacking chair were produced in the projects in both the fall and spring terms. Apart from the projects developed using 3D printers, a sensor circuit has been developed for visually impaired individuals, and an application called CODAssistant - (Communication Assistant for Deaf People) is also being developed so that hearing-impaired individuals can easily select their complaints when visiting the hospital.

PROJ 201 is a course in which students are introduced to the basic research environment and skills by working on a project with members from different units. Students can match projects opened by supervisors or find a supervisor for a project they design. Students can carry out the TOM@University project within the scope of PROJ 201 with a project coordinator from the Civic Involvement Projects Office.

As an example of campus hacking practices, a birdhouse was built with a 3D printer in the scope of PROJ 201 course and placed on the Sabancı University campus.
